Opening of BR Ambedkar govt college: Girls from Boota Mandi on hunger strike

JALANDHAR: Girls from Boota Mandi, Khurla Kingra and adjoining areas have been demanding opening of a college in their area.

To get their demand fulfilled, they have been observing a hunger strike for the past 100 days.

Earlier, they were sitting at the site where the college was supposed to come up.

The girls have been sitting at BR Ambedkar Chowk for the past six days. They want a college to be opened in the name of BR Ambedkar at Boota Mandi.

According to them, a college was initially promised in 1992 by the then Chief Minister, Beant Singh.

They have been sitting on the strike under the banner of the Sarva Samaj Sangharsh Committee. Jagdish Disha, president of the committee, said after the announcement, Parkash Singh Badal promised to build a college in 1999 and thereafter, the same promise was repeated by Sukhbir Singh Badal in 2008.

He said years had passed and announcements were made but nothing had been implemented. Apart from a single polytechnic college, there was no other government college in Jalandhar, he added.

The girls said it was not for the girls of a particular religion or caste but it was for them who belonged to the weak financial background.

“We have been observing a hunger strike but if the government does not listen to us, we have to adopt other ways so that our voices could be heard,” said Seema Klair

During this time the girls went on hunger strike for 8 days.

While giving a short speech, Seema Klair said that even if we have to sacrifice our life to get college, we are ready to sacrifice because we are the children of Baba Saheb Dr. Ambedkar and struggle is in our blood.

Every day different girls came on hunger strike but Seema Klair was the only one who remained on hunger strike for 8 consecutive days.

The biggest contribution in getting this college is from these girls and especially Seema Klair, thanks to whom today Boota Mandi Jalandhar has got BR Ambedkar Government College.

Finally, city gets govt degree college after 27 years
It was two years ago in June, July and August that girls of Boota Mandi, Khurla Kingra and adjoining areas had got together and demanded the opening of a degree college in the Boota Mandi area that was initially promised in 1992 by the then Chief Minister Beant Singh.

Such was the protest that it continued for a total of 107 days then in the area and also the girls went on a hunger strike.

And it was not for the first time that the demand was raised. The college was initially promised in 1992. But even after the announcement, it took 27 years to complete the demand. The area got its college today when Chief Minister Amarinder Singh laid the foundation stone of the college for girls.
