Monuments of the Gandhara Civilization at Taxila - 04 (Jaulian)

Image
This is my fourth post about the monuments of the Gandhara Civilization at Taxila. In my previous articles, I gave my readers a brief introduction to the Gandhara civilization, the museum at Taxila, the stupa at Dharmarajika, the holiest of Buddhist sites in this region and Pipplan. In this article, I shall take my readers on a tour of a very beautiful site, called Jaulian, my favourite. This site is located at  33°45'54.0"N, 72°52'29.5"E , on a small hill, and visitors will have to ascend almost 50 meters from the parking area. Proper stairs have been constructed and the path is safe, without any hindrance or trouble. However, hundreds of stairs will take a test of your stamina. But believe me, this little trouble is nothing compared to what you will find above. The monuments at Jaulian are highly ornamented and in a better state of preservation. These were constructed during the Kushan period, in the 2nd century AD. During this period the capital of Taxila was at Si...

Image

Chinese Buddhist Sculpture

Image
Seated Buddha, probably Shakyamuni (Shijiamouni) China late 4th–early 5th century   Representations of the Buddha wearing a thick shawl over both shoulders and sitting atop a throne with lions on either side are Chinese adaptations of images derived from the northwest region of the Indian subcontinent, particularly from areas in present-day Pakistan (known as Gandhara in the ancient world). Scientific examination of this sculpture has shown that it was cast using several ceramic molds, a technique that was also used to create the ancient bronze ritual vessels on view in this gallery. By the fifth century, the lost-wax method, which may have been introduced with Buddhism, was used more often for the casting of Chinese sculptures.  Buddha Maitreya (Mile) China dated 486 (10th year of Taihe reign)  This is the largest early gilt-bronze Chinese sculpture known today. The Buddha’s broad shoulders, powerful physique, and long legs derive from fifth century Indian pr...

Monuments of the Gandhara Civilization at Taxila - 08 (Bhamala Stupa)

Image
The world-famous Gandhara civilization has many monuments, like stupas, and monasteries around Taxila. You can see the details on Taxila Museum, Dharmarajika, Mohra Moradu, Pipplan, Jaulian, Jinnan Wali Dheri, Jandial Temple, and Giri Fort, in my previous posts on this blog. So, I shall not repeat the information about the Gandhara civilization, its historical significance and architectural beauty.  All the above-mentioned places are near Taxila or on the road to Khanpur Dam, hence, easily accessible. However, one of them Bhamal Stupa, the topic of this post, is a bit difficult to reach. This stupa is located on the other side of the Khanpur Lake i.e. the northern side. This site is located at   33°49'58.40"N,  72°58'34.71"E  on a small hill, on the banks of River Haro. It is difficult to reach as the path leading to the site is unpaved and is just a stony track, with many twists and bends. Such is the con...
