I have come back to my roots in Jalandhar after 35 years long diplomatic service in the Indian Foreign Service.  I would like to share some oral history of the place called Bootan Mandi, my native place. Bootan Mandi, a neglected slum about 40 years before ( now a much better place), remained a hub of dalit social and political awakening as it was the centre of leather business owned by the Dalits (Chamars) of the region even before independence in 1947. The dalits of the Doaba region of Punjab, led by Seth Sunder Dass and Seth Kishan Dass of Bootan Mandi fully supported the Ad-dharam Movement under the stewardship of Babu Mangoo Ram and also the struggle of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for the emancipation of dalits. ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਦੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੋਲ ਬੋਲਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਕੌਣ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ? ਅੱਜ ਤੋਂ 100 ਸਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਜਦੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਦੀ ਜ਼ੁਬਾਨ 'ਤੇ ਪਾਬੰਦੀ ਸੀ, ਉਦੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਨਿਕਲਿਆ— 'ਮੂਕਨਾਇਕ'। ਅਸੀਂ ਸਭ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਹੈ, ਬਾਬਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਡਾ. ਬੀ.ਆਰ. ਅੰਬੇਡਕਰ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਦੇਖੀ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਦੇ ਉਸ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਦੇ ਟਾਈਟਲ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਲਿਖੀਆਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋ ਮਰਾਠੀ ਲਾਈਨਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ? ਉਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ, ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ 'ਗੁਪਤ ਕੋਡ' ਸਨ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਦਲ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ। काय करून आता धरुनिया भीड | निःशक हे तोड वाजविले ||१|| नव्हे जगी कोण मुकियाचा जाण | सार्थक लाजोनी नव्हे हित ||२|| ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਕਿ ਸੰਤ ਤੁਕਾਰਾਮ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਬਾਬਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਕਿਉਂ ਲਿਖੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਸਲੀ ਮਤਲਬ ਕੀ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ 31 ਜਨਵਰੀ 1920 ਨੂੰ ਬਾਬਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਡਾ. ਬੀ.ਆਰ. ਅੰਬੇਡਕਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ 'ਮੂਕਨਾਇਕ' ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ, ਤਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਟਾਈਟਲ ਦੇ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਮਹਾਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਦੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਸੰਤ ਤੁਕਾਰਾਮ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਦੋਹੇ (ਅਭੰਗ) ਲਿਖੇ ਸਨ। ਬਾਬਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਲਾਈਨਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੋਚ-ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਚੁਣੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਸਮ...
